The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season — and gave rookie head coach McKenna Weaver her first career coaching win — with a 77-62 triumph over Milwaukee Area Tech on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Weaver, a 2016 Sandburg alumna and former All-Arrowhead Conference and All-Region IV standout with the Chargers, was given the game ball following the victory. The Chargers (1-3) never trailed and forced the Stormers (0-7) into committing 37 turnovers.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sophomore Shelby Glover (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood) opened the scoring with a 3-pointer as the Chargers started the game with 15 of the 19 points and took a 41-26 lead into halftime.
  • Sandburg led by as much as 24, but MATC closed to 66-56 midway through the fourth quarter. The Chargers answered with a 7-0 run that was sparked by a short jumper from Emily Cash (Yates City, Ill./Farmington) and a layup by Addison Eger (Mendon, Ill./Unity).

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Sophomore forward Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./homeschooled) notched her first career double-double while posting career-highs of 11 points, 15 rebounds and five steals on 4-for-8 shooting.
